Building off a long history of research in the area of intimate partner violence, NIJ is now looking to relationships during adolescence to understand the factors that put individuals at risk for involvement in abusive romantic relationships as adults.
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness month, but dating violence can happen across all age groups.
According to national research, 1 out of 3 teens report knowing friends or peers who have experienced dating abuse.
Worse, the Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Survey finds that 1 in 10 teens report being physically and/or sexually abused by a dating partner.
Approximately 25 percent of teens report experiencing TDV annually (Noonan & Charles, 2009).
It can include emotional, verbal, physical and/or sexual abuse.
